5 Athletes To Watch Out For During The 2018 Winter Olympics

The 2018 Winter Olympics are currently being held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, hosting approximately 3000 athletes and running from 9th to 25th February. With 102 medal events involving 15 different winter sports, let’s take a look at some of the athletes to watch out for, who are expected to put in big performances!

Chloe Kim (USA): Snowboarding

First up is Chloe Kim representing the USA in snowboarding, who is just 17 years old. She is being tipped as one of the stars of the future and was deemed too young to compete in the previous Olympics four years ago in Sochi. Chloe is known as a halfpipe snowboard specialist and has put in some great performances over the past few months. She has already won the Winter X-Games three times and represented the USA at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics winning both the halfpipe and slopestyle titles. Chloe is one of our youngest athletes to watch out for during the 2018 Games.

Nathan Chen (USA): Figure Skating

At only 18 years of age, Nathan Chen of the USA is being touted as one of the favourites to win Olympic gold in the figure skating. Nathan has demonstrated that he is capable of lining up five four-rotation jumps all in the space of a four-and-a-half-minute routine. On top of this he has also been working on his artistry and skating skills to challenge Yuzuru Hanyu, the reigning Olympic champion. Chen has won 3 Grand Prix competitions from October to December last year, beating Hanyu along the way.

Lindsey Vonn (USA): Alpine Skiing

At 33 years of age, Lindsey Vonn has four World Cup overall championship titles and a downhill Olympic gold from the 2010 Games to her name. Even though she missed the 2014 Games due to injury, she is still one of the most recognised sportswomen in the world. She is the ex-girlfriend of Tiger Woods and is aiming for one last Olympic title in South Korea.

Evgenia Medvedeva (RUS): Figure Skating

The Russian figure skater already has two world championship titles to her name at only 18 years old. She is presently recovering from a fractured metatarsal, which saw her miss both the Russian nationals and Grand Prix Final. She will face stiff competition from a fellow Russian teenage prodigy, Alina Zagitova, who at 15 years old had a sensational debut senior season.

Kjetil Jansrud (NOR): Alpine Skiing

Kjetil is just one representative of a formidable national team this year, also including the king of speed Aksel Lund Svindal and slalom expert Henrik Kristoffersen. Kristen took the gold in the Super-G and bronze in the downhill in the 2014 Sochi Games. He also has experience of the course, winning the downhill on the Olympic course in February last year.
