First prescribed by Hippocrates the father of medicine, aspirin was used to ease the pain of childbirth in 5 BC. Aspirin is present in at least 50 over the counter remedies and is derived from the willow bark’s active ingredient salicin. Every year, billions of aspirin tablets are taken worldwide for a variety of different reasons. Let’s take a look at some of the main reasons to take aspirin.

1. Aspirin Burns Body Fat

One of the key active components in aspirin, salicylate, boosts the activity of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which plays an important role in regulating metabolism. Put simply, aspirin helps to metabolise carbohydrates and fatty acids through AMPK regulation.

2. Aspirin Helps to Prevent Heart Disease

Since the 1940’s it has been known that aspirin helps to prevent heart disease. Additionally it has been proven that aspirin can also help those who have already experienced a heart attack, with a daily low dose of 80 milligrams recommended.

3. Aspirin Helps to Prevent Strokes

Whilst a large majority of people are aware of aspirins uses for heart disease prevention, less are aware that aspirin can significantly reduce the risk of strokes. Strokes are caused by the formation of blood clots in the brain. Many people who have suffered from a stroke are not prescribed aspirin, which could prevent further problems, as aspirin helps to thin the blood.

4. Aspirin May Help to Preserve Cognitive Skills

A five year study was conducted using more than 100 female seniors, where participants took tests measuring their memory and cognitive skills. The results noted that women who took a dose of between 75 to 150 milligrams of aspirin on a daily basis, out-scored the women who did not.

5. Aspirin Fights Inflammation

Like the plant based compound curcumin, aspirin helps to fight against excess inflammation in the body. This is one of the main benefits of taking aspirin, with inflammation being the cause of many diseases. Diseases such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease and several types of cancer have all been linked to inflammation.

6. Aspirin Stops Free Radical Damage

As we age our bodies become more susceptible to free radical “leakage” in our cellular organelles, known as mitochondria. Problems arise if there is too much free radical leakage when our mitochondria are producing energy (ATP). The mitochondria within our cells switch off if this occurs and if too many mitochondria switch off the cell dies. If too many of our cells begin to die, the organ dies. If too many of our organs die then ultimately our body dies.

Aspirin helps to combat free radical leakage by speeding up the flow of electrons in mitochondria.

7. Aspirin Helps to Prevent Skin Cancer

Aspirin may help to prevent you from getting skin cancer. A study conducted in Australia, found that participants who took aspirin at least twice a week for a period of five years were 60% less likely to contract skin cancer, whilst participants who took aspirin daily over five years were 90% less likely. In fact these benefits start after just one year of use.

It is recommended to take one low dose baby aspirin (81 mg) a day.
